Don Vito Corleone read the signs from early on, but Especially after seeing how Tessio and Clemenza were receiving Michael as the acting don, and how after years of stability they now were looking to move away from the family and start their own.
As agreed upon during Vito’s funeral, the day had finally come.
However, things don’t go to plan for poor Tessio.
In fact it was a really bad day for all of Michael Corleoneโs enemies.
As Tessio and Hagen were preparing to attend the summit, Willie Cicci told him that Michael was coming in a separate car. Tessio was visibly upset, saying that it threw off his so called “arrangements”. Hagen says he can’t come along either, while Cicci and several of Clemenza’s men surround Tessio. Finally he understands. Michael has found out about his treachery, Tessio asks Tom to tell Michael that it was “only business” and he always liked him.
And is driven away never to be seen again. Still wanting to cash in any compassion or sense of brotherhood he had left, Tessio then asks Tom if he could get him off the hook for “the old times’ sake”. Tom, regretfully rejected his appeal. Although in the novel it was actually TOm who asks Michael, when they conclude that Tessio was the traitor. We never do get to see in the films or in the main novel, however, we do get a glimpse of what happened in the later novels. Willie Cicci and a few other corleone men drive Tessio to Two Toms, his very own social club, where Tessio and his traitorous men were executed by his former protege Nick Geraci, while Al Neri looked on.Tessio, and his dead co-conspirators were then brought to an abandoned gas station on Staten Island, in which was known to be Barzini territory, therefore His death was attributed to the Barzini family. Tessio’s wife and his children were provided for by the Corleone’s after his death.
Tessio lived quite an eventful life, rising from a low level hustler to a caporegime in the most powerful crime family the United States had ever seen. He was an incredible leader, a gifted war general with many victories under his belt. He lived a long life, where he managed to consistently win in the game of power, out strategizing and really outliving many of his contemporaries, which was quite an achievement.
Yet, his biggest mistake, was once again like many, underestimating a corleone.
But what do you think of the legendary capo?
Do you think he had a point? Was his actions justified or was Michael too naive to think he would be accepted as don?
Im curious to what you have to say, so Letโs discuss in the comments.
